Celebrating Three Years of Empowering the Next Generation
Addiction can be difficult for anyone to overcome, but the journey to recovery is often especially tough for teens. Drugs and alcohol can feel like a comforting escape from raging hormones, high academic expectations, peer pressure and the looming responsibilities of adulthood. Finding a way to deal with these challenges while entering long-term recovery can feel impossible. Without professional care, it’s often too much for someone so young to bear.
To help kids cope, Next Generation Village (NGV) opened its doors in August 2015. Since our center’s first admission on September 2, 2015, we’ve helped over 550 adolescents enter recovery for drug and alcohol use disorders. And we’re just getting started. In the years to come, we hope to assist even more teens as we continue to grow and evolve.
To help honor three years of care, let’s celebrate what makes NGV special.
Quality Treatment by Caring Professionals
There are many different approaches to treating addiction. However, at NGV, we believe that a complete continuum of full-time, inpatient treatment is what sets teens up for success in long-term recovery. By gradually moving through multiple levels of care, patients can learn the skills they need to cope with triggers, resist temptations and find renewed enthusiasm in sobriety.
Most patients at NGV begin treatment with medical detox. During this phase of care, any traces of drugs or alcohol are gradually removed from the body under the supervision of medical professionals. This helps ensure that teens stay safe and comfortable while they experience any withdrawal symptoms. Once complete, patients may enter inpatient residential, partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient care, where they can begin the therapeutic work of recovery.
At NGV, we believe that every adolescent can recover from addiction if they are fully committed to sobriety and receive compassionate, professional care. To help ensure that each client at NGV receives the support they need, we always have a minimum of one nurse on staff per floor, along with one behavioral health technician for every 10 patients.
Balance Between Scholastics and Sport
A quality education can open countless doors for adolescents, providing them with the knowledge and perspective they need to live fulfilling, successful lives well beyond their teen years. Because of this, NGV takes great care to ensure that all our patients keep up with their academic studies while in treatment. Patients spend a significant amount of time each day doing schoolwork. Two full-time educators work closely with teens, ensuring that they keep up with their academic work and adjusting the curriculum as needed.
While education is important to both recovery and lifelong success, leisure is equally essential to long-term sobriety. Finding new ways to cope with life’s challenges — and appreciate its triumphs — is a critical part of maintaining hope and enthusiasm in recovery. That’s why NGV provides teens with a number of recreational and artistic activities to help them develop their interests and express themselves, including:
- Equine therapy
- Art and crafts
We also offer regular opportunities for off-site visits to spark curiosity and keep patients motivated. Once clinically cleared, teens can participate in day trips to:
- Animal rehabilitation centers
- State parks
- Water parks
- Chocolate factories
To honor the dedication of each graduate who completes a rehabilitation program at NGV, our staff and current patients gather together for a special ceremony. During this ceremony, clinical staff, medical treatment providers and current patients talk about the impact that the graduate had on their lives. Each graduate is presented with a special NGV coin at the end of the ceremony, to help them remember how far they’ve come, and the support they’ll always have in long-term recovery.
Before leaving NGV, graduates also have the opportunity to decorate a small stepping stone. Each stepping stone is placed in the center’s reflection area, where prospective, current and past patients can go to feel inspired and encouraged. This way, they can leave a little piece of themselves and their accomplishments behind, and help remind future generations that recovery is always possible.
If your child struggles with addiction, NGV can help. After just three years in operation, we’ve already delivered compassionate, high quality treatment to over 550 adolescents.
